Despite the right theme in the right time of year, a weekend that tends to attract the right audience and an "A" Cinemascore, Paramount and DreamWorks' family friendly "Rise of the Guardians" didn't rise too high this frame with $9.3 million on Friday for fourth place behind a pack of holiday holdovers.
And leading that pack, Summit's "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 2," down about 75% from last Friday's opening night, grossed $17.4 million Friday to kick off another weekend at number one with a three-day haul estimated around $43 million and a five-day around $64 million.
In spite of a disappointing start, Par expects to see strong legs for "Rise" as holiday toons released at this time of year tend to gain many multiples over their lifetimes. Pic has cumed $17.9 million so far and will likely land a little north of $30 million in five days of release.
Between "Part 2" and "Rise," Sony's "Skyfall" earned $14.8 million Friday, while Disney's "Lincoln" collected $10 million. Yesterday puts "Skyfall's" and the final "Twilight" installment's domestic cumes both just barely over the $200 million milestone.
Fox's "Life of Pi" landed just behind "Rise" with $8.9 million and a current cume of $17.1 million. FimDistrict's "Red Dawn," which also opened Wednesday, grossed $6 million Friday and is looking at a five-day haul close to $22 million for seventh place this frame behind "Wreck-It Ralph."
